And to bring it all together, and keep it easy to teach, we also include a BONUS ‘done-for-you’ sequential teaching plan suitable for a 3+ hour segment in a ‘music camp’ (and easily adaptable for a music unit study over several lessons in the class room).

‘The Planets’ Slideshow Presentation includes:

  • An exciting musical story-telling of ‘Journey to the Stars’, by Marshall Cavendish, and based on four movements from Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’ – Mars, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter. Let students’ imaginations flourish, as they take in this audio adventure!
  • Our engaging slideshow about ‘The Planets’ orchestral suite & it’s composer, Gustav Holst. Students learn about the distinctive musical features of each of the four movements included in the musical story, and the life of the composer, Gustav Holst. A handy vocabulary & definitions list is also included. (Slideshow presentation instructions are all included for teacher’s ease of use.)
  • ‘Click the Button’ links to online performances of Holst’s ‘The Planets’. Including performances by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, at Royal Albert Hall, London. And there’s also a link to a very exciting & fun ‘flash mob’ of Royal College of Music students. Let students see the exhilaration of live music, as this ‘flash mob’ surprises bystanders with ‘Mars’ and Jupiter’!
  • Engaging extension ideas – To create further opportunity for student learning around this topic and its ongoing cultural relevance, and enrich this music unit study. We’ve included links to a few short videos about the background of ‘The Planets’ suite; and a very interesting comparison of the ‘Mars’ movement and the famous ‘Star Wars’ theme!

The printable Activity Book/Worksheets Kit includes:

  • A set of activity sheets: Including a listening activity sheet for each of the four planets, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter. These music appreciation activity sheets are based on the elements of music. There is also an activity sheet for students to research and record information about the life of Gustav Holst, and his musical career.
  • A ‘mini-dictionary’ page covering all the elements of music used here, for those new to this concept. This provides students with easy-to-use definitions. There is also a helpful sheet of describing words which can be used for each of these Elements of Music.
  • Vocabulary work sheet, to match the elements of music definitions list. This helps students understand and process what is meant by each term, and how to use it.
  • Quality graphics and design throughout, making this music appreciation unit study interesting and engaging. Great for music camp, and great for the classroom!

The ‘Outer Space’ Composition Kit Includes:

  • FOUR different levels of composing activities, for beginner, elementary, intermediate and advancing students.
  • Each activity set takes students step by step through the composition process, to build confidence, and create a satisfying musical sound. Each set also includes a keyboard picture of the relevant whole tone scale/s, so students easily know what notes to use.
  • The Beginner composition project uses graphic notation, for early composing success. The Elementary project uses traditional notation and treble clef. The Intermediate project teaches students how to write a melody and an accompanying bass line. And the Late Intermediate to Advancing project kit extends students’ composing skills to include modulation, using binary or ternary form, and adding in phrasing and dynamics for a fully finished score.
  • Improvisation is encouraged throughout, to help students hear what it is they are composing. Improvisation also improves audiation skills, and gives them the opportunity to experiment and find the sounds and patterns they want to use!
  • Music Composition gets students reading and writing music – which is a great benefit to their sight reading and theory skills too!
  • Great for Group class AND Individual tuition – Suits beginner, elementary, intermediate and early advancing levels. Whether you are teaching at music camp, or in the classroom, get your students creating music, and exploring their own creativity.

PLUS – This ‘Outer Space Adventure’ Music Camp unit also includes a ready-to-go two hour, integrated session teaching plan, including a group rhythm activity, and a ‘peer performance’ segment. Complete with sequential teaching plan and editable ‘running order’ sheet, this BONUS resource is very useful for a music camp unit!
