Do your students know how to put the ‘final polish’ on their pieces ready for recitals, competitions and exams? Do they understand those final practice strategies and essential mindset shifts which help to anchor their playing ready to give a polished performances?
Playing piano and performing piano are two different things – just because students can do the first, does not mean they are ready for the second. In addition to that, teaching performance requires a different skill set, and can be challenging to teach – especially if we are not currently performing very much ourselves.
Performing in recitals and exams can be daunting for our students – they need a simple and systematic way to tackle the last few weeks of performance prep. With our ‘Seven Top Tips’ performance posters & cards you can help them prepare more thoroughly, and feel ‘ready’ to perform!
This tried and true set of performance preparation strategies covers the following concepts:
- The importance of variety in daily practice
- The need for ‘performance practice’ before the big day
- Music is not an obstacle course – it’s a narrative! We perform better when we use the music to ‘tell a story’
- Ideas to simulate performance, and help students get used to playing for others
- The need to pro-actively keep your mind engaged when performing, and tips on how to do this
- The power of using ‘visualisation’ to improve fluency and musicality
- Counsel against ‘perfectionism’ in performing – we are humans not robots, and its much more helpful to teach students to be resilient, not ‘perfect’!
